Sustainability goes beyond Budgets: Environmental, Equity, and Economic considerations in Research Data Management for Biodiversity Data
Speaker
Dr. Giuditta Parolini (Museum für Naturkunde, Leibniz Institute for Evolution and Biodiversity Science)
Abstract
In research data management, sustainability is discussed mainly with reference to financial and to some extent social aspects. Environmental aspects are hardly ever considered. There is a value, however, in addressing environmental, equity, and economic factors, the three E's of sustainability, simultaneously and understand their interconnections – because research data management is not just expected to be resource efficient, but also to deliver on the values of open science and take ownership of its environmental footprint.
The research project "Promoting Sustainable Data Practices and Infrastructures in Biodiversity Science" reflects on the interplay of environmental, social, and economic sustainability in research data management with the aim to provide practical tools that the biodiversity science community can use to make its data practices and infrastructures cost-effective, socially inclusive, and lower their environmental impact.
As part of the project, a checklist was developed to include provisions for environmental, social, and economic sustainability in data policies. The talk introduces the checklist and its aims and uses it as a starting point to discuss key sustainability aspects in the management of biodiversity data.
