Topic Tables
Topic Tables 2026

AI-Assisted Metadata Enrichment
Sequencing data hold enormous potential—but often lack structured, interoperable metadata. An interdisciplinary team is exploring how AI can improve their use.

Historical Data for Long-Term Biodiversity Analyses
A large portion of historical biodiversity data is still only accessible in analog form. An interdisciplinary team is developing concepts for their systematic digitization.

FAIR-Linked Data for Plant Research
Data on plant traits are collected worldwide but are often difficult to find and compare. A team is developing guidelines for their FAIR-compliant exchange.

Citizen Science Data for Freshwater Monitoring
Many citizen science projects collect valuable data on aquatic ecosystems. A team is developing approaches to better leverage this potential.
What are Topic Tables?
The NFDI4Biodiversity Topic Tables provide a space for the biodiversity community to collaboratively advance key topics in research data management. Based on an open call, four topics were selected for 2026, which are integrated into the consortium’s work programme and supported organizationally. NFDI4Biodiversity provides the structural framework, facilitates professional exchange, and ensures that results are made visible and can be sustainably developed further.
The aim is to bring together expertise, connect existing approaches, and develop tangible outputs—such as white papers, guidelines, or roadmaps. The resulting contributions support practical work with biodiversity data, promote shared standards, and strengthen reliable, interoperable data use within the community. Topic Table projects are typically designed to run for one year.
